Hinduism was a term used by the Greeks and Romans to refer to the Indian religious system. Hindu's called themselves, vedic or veda and their belief's are based on the "Sanatana Dharma (Eternal Law)."

Upanisads were written between about 1000 and 600 BCE(before common era).
From the 2nd century BCE to the 4th century CE the Ramayana and the Mahabarata were composed and became a cornerstone of Hindu belief's. There are many sites with both these texts available online.
Bhagavad Gita ("Song of the Lord") is contained in the Mahabarata and is definitely worth your read.
The thing I like best about Hinduism is that they have a specific "God/dess" for a specific need, such as, Durga, Kali, Krishna, etc. Each one represents a different aspect of God/dess and you pray to the one you feel fits your needs. There are of course "patron" Deities too, so soldiers, farmers and mothers all have special Deities.
It is very balanced religion and one I incorporate into my ritual. You may find one suits you also, only way to really know it is to look for yourself...TG
